In the early part of the 20th century, particularly during the Depression, the “hobo nickel” became a common form of low-brow art. The buffalo nickel was very well suited to this because the Indian head on one side covered a large area of the coin and the metal was soft enough to carve easily. The skull carving was one of many popular designs.
This limited run of money clips have been made with genuine buffalo nickels that I have hand carved the skull design into. Each clip is made out of hefty 18ga. solid brass and is hammered and oxidized for a rustic feel. The coins are then riveted to the clip. Each clip is slightly different as all the work is done by hand and each nickel has different degrees of age and wear. These clips are made to order so please allow an extra 7-10 days for production time. A great piece for those who like vintage flare, historical artifacts or are “tramps like us”.
